The modified scheme included the construction of what is known as the Intermediate Reservoir (capacity, about 200 million gallons), the laying of large suction and rising mains, the erection of a pumping station and provision of pumping machinery and other contingent works, the whole being designated "Tytom Tuk Scheme First Section". The works comprised under the modified scheme were begun in 1904 and completed in 1908, the cost amounting to 8896,139.64.

The combined expenditure on the emergency works and on the modified scheme all of which was debited to the Vote "Tytam Tuk Scheme, First Section" amounted to $1,038,165.08.

In carrying out the "First Section", a suction main, consisting of cast-iron pipes, 18" in diameter, had to be loid from the Intermediate Reservoir to the Pumping Station, but as this main would be submerged by the construction of the larger reservoir contemplated lower down the valley, it was expressly provided that it should be taken up and that the pipes should be utilized in laying additional rising mains which would be required in connection with the larger scheme.

For the lack of funds, the "Second Section" of the scheme was allowed to remain in abeyance until 1912. The works comprised in this scheme, which were estimated to cost 82,455,000, were begun in October, 1912, and are now drawing to

a close.

In preparing the estimate for the "Second Section", the number of pipes and quantity of lead which would be recovered from the suction main laid under the "First Section"
